Section V: Presentation of Evidence

Being Daniel Jones
Part V

Applying the theory of multiple intelligences to Daniel Jones requires examining his choice of activities, artifacts of his performance and abilities, and analyzing his personal development under the different lenses of each area of intelligence.  I am presenting evidence in the forms of both qualitative and quantitative data to support my conclusions about his giftedness in these various areas.

With talents in both areas, Daniel is able to excel in science, involving both strong language ability and excellent reasoning skills.  Below are some of his science test scores:

Musical

Daniel possesses musical giftedness.  He has participated in both choir and solo singing, competing in district and state festivals.  He received a superior rating each year in solo singing at the high school level.

Visual/Spatial

This is an area that has not been specifically measured.  I predict Daniel is strong because he easily understands complex physics problems that involve spatial concepts.

 Bodily/Kinesthetic
This is not something Daniel is naturally interested in.  He did not choose to play sports beyond a year or two in soccer and a year in flag football.  If he has natural intelligence, it has not been developed.

Interpersonal

Daniel has always exhibited sensitivity to others’ feelings but his natural shyness has inhibited its expression.  As an LDS missionary, Daniel is developing this intelligence.  He was made a senior companion early and his mission president says that the people in his area are “in good hands.”

Intrapersonal

Self-regulation is one of Daniel’s strengths.  In all his years of school he was never tardy and never absent, except for an excused activity.  It is quite remarkable to have a student who graduated high school with a 4.0 cumulative GPA and zero absences or tardies.  He always turned in his assignments.  His work was always legible and correct.

Daniel probably has an accurate sense of his strengths but may overestimate his weaknesses, measuring them against the areas of natural talent.

Naturalistic

I don’t know if Daniel is strong in this area of intelligence.  He is extremely attentive to detail, so I suspect he might be.  But I do not know of any assessment in this area.

Existential

Though this is another area without quantitative data, I believe Daniel possesses this area of intelligence.  He has been able to see the big picture from early childhood.  An example of this was when I began dating after my divorce from his dad.  Daniel commented at age 7 that the man I was dating was “buying my affection.”  There weren’t obvious large gifts, but he certainly was spoiling us with nice dinners, etc.  He is a serious young man who is always looking at relationships between people and elements.  His gifts in existential things will manifest as he gets older.
